CCR Baby

First of all, props to the Daily Post for quoting a CCR song in their Daily Prompt today. It got my attention and dragged me out of the slump of anti-creativity, especially seeing as the song could plausibly have been inspired by an acid trip and has one of the shortest choruses I have heard in my life. Perhaps you wonder why a youthful teen such as myself is familiar with everyone’s favorite hippy band* from the sixties? It’s my pleasure to inform you that CCR covers remain healthy and alive in today’s high school band rooms due to the simplicity of their 3 to 4 chord songs that are almost always in G or D major.

Before I talk about the weeds in my backyard, let’s discuss what’s in John Fogerty’s (probably a very different kind of weed…). I quote “tambourines and elephants playing in a band”, a “giant doing cartwheels”, and “a dinosaur Victrola listening to Buck Owens”. It’s the stuff of nightmares. That’s a house party you don’t want to have. Turns out, however, the song is not about an acid trip (it’s what we all were thinking). It was written for Fogerty’s three-year-old son, which explains the wacky imagery. Oh well, at least we still have “White Rabbit”.

Anyway, my backyard:

The first thing you see is my dog. It’s high time I talk about my dog because he is my screen image, and is perfect. Vinnie has doggy ADHD, the reason he is the first thing you see is because he is always doing things in the yard. Some of the things he does are: stare at our chickens, lick his lips, repress his urge to rip them shreds, chew on sticks while eyeing our chickens, chew on garden tools while eyeing our chickens, and dig up the only useful plants in the garden.

The second thing you see is the havoc he has wreaked. Specifically chewed up shovel handles, knee deep holes in the lawn, and stray shingles from our roof. We still haven’t figured out how exactly he obtained them. Sometimes I think he’s magical. He fell down a fifty foot cliff once without getting a scratch. A very impressive animal.

When my dead grandmother owned and maintained our home, she kept a lush and entirely aesthetic garden that was the envy of the town’s gardeners. People would stare through the fence at her handiwork, and look in awe at the delicate flowers she grew. The yard has gone to shit now. I actually prefer it. It’s much more natural looking. I’ve never gone for gardens that are entirely dirt and pansies. Even weeds look better to me. Thank you for your time.

* Correction: second favorite, we can’t forget the Grateful Dead.

I’m not partial to either, but in Marin County everyone has their Grateful Dead story (for example “Jerry Garcia’s first wife used to be my neighbor”), most are embellished.
