Debt and Mattresses (Daily Prompt)

This is such a relevant prompt seeing as I’m leaving soon. College hoo-yoo-moo! (Yes, I just made a new exclamatory phrase.)

In short, I’ll be leaving the bubble-like county I have lived in my entire life for a different one somewhere else, probably Philadelphia or Chicago. In other words, I will be leaving financial safety with my parents for exorbitant student loans. I will be leaving my secluded bedroom in the yard for shitty crowded dorms with shitty crowded mattresses…heh heh.

I’ll be leaving a small town that most closely resembles a hippie’s armpit: earthy and unshaven. I can’t wait to go somewhere with decent public transit, and it’ll be nice to not have my mother checking in my bowel movements. (I’m being facetious, I’m really going to miss this place, but not anything in the latter sentence.)

The one thing holding me back is money, and even though I’ve been offered admission to the Honors colleges at two schools along with absurdly good merit scholarships, it’s still prohibitively expensive for me to graduate debt free. That’s okay, though, because according to my mom’s friend, I’m too white for both Philly and Chicago, and I’ll be shot before sophomore year. Debt won’t matter, then!

So it’s all good. Off to the East Coast, and out of a county with ridiculously high beauty standards and matching prices. I’ll go to a city with public transit. That way I can travel to other cities to see marginally different homeless people, garbage cans, and liquor stores! Supposedly the sandwiches are really cheap. Of course, being a full time student doing a work-study will leave me with no money of my own to spend so I’ll never taste them, but I can always root around in the compost.

Enjoy it. Sounds nice. Leaving. I’d be jealous, but I’ve already done that. Try to avoid winding up back where you started. Actually it’s not an entirely bad thing, because then you know how good those last four years were.
